JAKARTA – The Statistics Indonesia (BPS) office for DKI Jakarta has reported highly positive growth in the capital’s tourism sector. Over the past year, the majority of international tourists visiting Jakarta originated from China, Malaysia, and Singapore.
In a recent video broadcast shared on the official YouTube channel of the DKI Jakarta Statistics Indonesia office, Acting Head Dwi Paramita Dewi stated that the volume of foreign tourists arriving in Jakarta in 2023 surged by an impressive 109.06 percent compared to the previous year.
To provide context, the bureau recorded 938,991 foreign visitors in 2022. That figure experienced a remarkable leap in 2023, reaching approximately 1.97 million arrivals.
Tourists from China, Malaysia, and Singapore Top the List
Dewi further elaborated that Chinese tourists constituted the largest demographic of international visitors exploring the capital.
“Throughout 2023, Chinese tourists were the largest group of overseas visitors to Jakarta,” Dewi explained in the video, which was published and live-streamed on February 5. “The number of Chinese tourists reached 319,802, accounting for 16.29 percent of all international visitors.”
Following closely behind China, neighboring countries Malaysia and Singapore contributed the next highest numbers of international tourists to Jakarta last year.
“Malaysian and Singaporean tourists ranked second and third, respectively,” Dewi added. “There were 237,928 tourists from Malaysia, making up 12.12 percent, and 153,254 from Singapore, comprising 7.81 percent of the total arrivals.”
A Strong Indicator of Post-Pandemic Recovery
According to the DKI Jakarta Statistics Indonesia office, this significant increase in foreign visitors is closely linked to the ongoing global economic and travel recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.
In December 2023 alone, 174,111 international arrivals were recorded through Jakarta’s primary entry points: Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, and the Port of Tanjung Priok.
However, the bureau also noted a slight year-on-year dip for the final month, pointing out that the December 2023 figure was lower than the number of international arrivals recorded in December of the previous year, which stood at 191,461. Despite this minor monthly fluctuation, the overarching annual trend highlights a robust and promising revitalization of Jakarta’s tourism industry.
